Robotic Treatment for Head and Neck Cancer preserves speech and swallowing
Over 45,000 Americans and approximately 500,000 people worldwide are diagnosed with head and neck cancers each year. Head and neck tumor treatments often involve a combination of surgery, radiation therapy, and chemotherapy. In many cases, surgery offers the greatest chance of cure; yet conventional surgery may require an almost ear-to-ear incision across the throat or splitting the jaw, resulting in speech and swallowing deficits for patients.
Revolutionizing care for head and neck cancer patients, a new minimally invasive surgery at Winter Park Memorial Hospital now offers patients an alternative to traditional surgery. Transoral robotic surgery (TORS) – allows surgeons to remove tumors of the mouth, tongue, tonsils and parts of the larynx while preserving speech, swallowing and eating.
The minimally invasive TORS approach, which accesses the surgical site through the mouth, has been shown to improve long term swallowing function and reduce risk of infection while speeding up the recovery time. When compared to traditional surgeries, after their cancers have been removed successfully, patients have been able to begin swallowing on their own sooner and leave the hospital earlier. TORS outcomes are markedly improved when compared to standard chemotherapy, radiation or traditional open surgical approaches for oropharyngeal cancer. While patients may still need radiation after TORS, it is at a much lower dose, with reduced side effects.
Head and Neck cancer specialists Jeffrey Lehman, MD and Henry Ho, MD

Specialists Jeffrey Lehman, MD and Henry Ho, MD, medical director of head and neck program at Winter Park Memorial Hospital utilize the daVinci Surgical System robot to precisely remove tumors. Accessing cancer through a patient’s mouth, the surgeons work together - one at the patient’s bedside and the other manipulating the two robotic arms and camera - to perform the surgical procedure. The robotic technology provides physicians three-dimensional, high-definition imaging and better dexterity.
A Center of Excellence
The treatment and management of head and neck cancers can be very complex. At Winter Park Memorial Hospital, the head and neck cancer program draws on the expertise of the area’s largest and most experienced team of otolaryngologists. In addition, patients at Winter Park Memorial Hospital can receive specialized multi-disciplinary care at Central Florida’s only dedicated hospital unit for otolaryngology patients.
Although a diagnosis of cancer is frightening, it can be treated safely and with good outcomes. Through revolutionary robotic procedures like TORS, and the expertise of our surgeons, patients can be assured the best possible care and new hope.
